How to Make a Tatted Collar
Tatting is a vintage craft involving knotting thread to form elaborate lace patterns. Tatting is distinguishable from other lace as it consists entirely of rings and arched chains, often embellished with picots, which are tiny loops between stitches, either for decoration or to join the lace together. Tatting can range from very simple patterns to intricate designs. The style began in the early 19th century with the increased demand for lace crafts. Tatting, like crochet or knitted lace, forms not only collars but edgings, doilies and tray clothes.

Work two double stitches, one purl stitch and another two double stitches nine times. Draw this into a circle.

Start the second circle, a short distance from the first, with two double stitches attached to the last purl stitch of the first circle. Work two double stitches eight times, one purl stitch and two double stitches. Repeat this one more time. Knot the ends of the thread and tie them on the wrong side.

Repeat this process to create the length you desire. Fasten each figure that follows to the previous one in the middle purl stitch of the circle.

Begin a second row using the same method. Attach each circle made to the middle circle of its adjacent in the first row.

Fill the circles with lace after finishing both rows to equal length. Use the pattern of three double stitches, fastened to a purl on the side of a leaf stitch turned inside, so it faces the opposite direction, followed by another three double stitches, attached to the purl stitch of the succeeding leaf stitch. Repeat this five times.

Work three double stitches and then join the stitches into a circle. Ensure it is not so close that the purls lose their natural position. Cut the thread and fasten the ends on the wrong side.
