Instructions

  1. Crochet the Body of the Mitten

    • 1

Create a slip knot and slide it onto your crochet hook. Chain five stitches.

    • 2

Single crochet in the second crochet from the hook and in each of the next two chains. Single crochet three times in the last chain, turning the chain to work in the round. Single crochet once in each of the next three chains and three times in the last chain. Do not join.

    • 3

Single crochet in the first single crochet and across to the end of the row. Single crochet three times in the single crochet at the end of each row. Continue to increase at the sides of each row until you reach the desired width for the fingertips, then single crochet evenly around in rows, until reaching the point where the top of the mitten will fit over the fingertips to their base. Pause stitching at the side of the hand toward the pinkie finger. Chain one and turn.

    • 4

Single crochet evenly across to the opposite (thumb) end of the glove. Count the number of stitches as you work. Chain an equal number to the number of completed single crochet stitches. Attach with a slip stitch to the turning chain in the previous row. Chain one and turn.

    • 5

Single crochet in each chain across, and in each single crochet across. Chain one and turn. Continue in rows until mitten is long enough to reach the bottom of the thumb. At the end of the row, instead of turning, join to the previous row with a slip stitch and begin working once more in rounds. Decrease as needed to fit the mitten to the wrist, and work in rounds until desired wrist length is achieved. Cut yarn, leaving a three-inch tail and finish off, weaving the end through the last row of stitches.

    Crochet and attach the thumb

    • 6

Chain two. Single crochet five times in the second crochet from the hook. Check for size, and add increases in following rows if needed. Crochet evenly in the round until desired length for thumb is reached.

    • 7

Single crochet twice in the next single crochet, and once in the following single crochet. Continue around for two rounds. Cut yarn, leaving a three-inch tail. Finish off, weaving the end of the yarn into the last row of stitches.

    • 8

Turn the body of the glove inside out. Insert the thumb piece into the opening and line up the edges.

    • 9

Thread the tapestry needle with yarn and sew the thumb in place. Turn right side out.

    Finishing the Mittens

    • 10

Try on the mittens. There should be a slight overlap at the palm of the two edges. Measure the hook and loop fastener tape and cut to fit along the opening. Sew into place with the needle and thread.

    • 11

Sew one side of the snap fastener on the palm side of the mittens, at the center point of the fingertips end. Fold the fingertip section backward against the wrist, and mark the place where the opposite side of the snap fastener should fit at the wrist.

    • 12

Sew the opposite side of the snap fastener in place. The snap fastener can be used to hold the fingertips section out of the way when needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use up bits of leftover yarn by changing colors randomly through the construction of the mittens. This will create a striped, bohemian look.

  • Hold an eyelash or other boutique yarn together with a worsted weight yarn to create a chunky weight thickness with a unique look.

  • When combining yarns, be sure to use only yarns with the same wash and care instructions.
