A basket that is overflowing can cause problems for a paper shredder.

Oztec paper shredders are useful tools to have in a home or office environment, especially when destroying sensitive documents is a consideration. Shredders contain many moving parts and electronics, making them susceptible to problems. The shredding throat can also become jammed and should be inspected regularly. If your shredder does encounter problems, it is often possible to get it back into normal operation by following a few common troubleshooting steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the shredder and unplug it from the wall. Let it cool for at least 30 minutes. Plug it back in and turn the switch to "On" or "Auto" and attempt to use the machine again.

    • 2

Empty the waste basket at the bottom of the shredder. An overstuffed waste basket can cause the shredder to malfunction. Also remove any plastic bags in the waste basket.

    • 3

Turn off the machine, unplug it and check the top and bottom of the shredding throat for any jammed paper or other materials. Use a can of compressed air to blow out any foreign objects or use a paper clip or small pliers to attempt to remove the objects.

    • 4

Plug the machine in and attempt to run it in reverse to clear any jammed items.

    • 5

Plug the shredder into a different power outlet. A bad outlet or a tripped breaker could prevent the machine from functioning. If you are still unsure, plug another simple device, such as a radio, into the outlet and see if it works.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not attempt to clear paper jams or foreign objects from the shredder while it is plugged in.
