How Do I Demonstrate Respect for My Employees?

Employers and employees can spend 40 or more hours together each week; that's more time than most people spend with their own families. In order for workdays to run smoothly, mutual respect between employer and employee is key. Employers can demonstrate that they respect their employees in a variety of ways. Demanding employers who make it clear that they care about the bottom line or project results only will struggle with gaining the respect of their workers. But if employees feel respected, they're likely to be motivated to always do their best.

Instructions

    • 1

Greet them each morning. Walking past your employees without offering a "hello" or "good morning" is rude and demonstrates a lack of respect for them.

    • 2

Speak to them in professional tones. Employees are not children, and speaking to them in a condescending, bossy tone shows a lack of respect.

    • 3

Show understanding and empathy. Employees may occasionally deal with personal issues that can temporarily slow their productivity or require a few days off. Put yourself in their shoes instead of complaining about how they're not meeting your expectations.

    • 4

Take an interest in your employees. Rather than always focus on business, talk to your employees about their weekend or vacation plans. Inquire about their families or interests outside the workplace. Invite a few employees to your home for a gathering or other outing to get to know them (and their families) better.

    • 5

Realize that your employees have personal lives. Demanding that employees work overtime or on the weekends doesn't show respect for their personal time or family time.

    • 6

Provide a listening ear. Employees may occasional have concerns about operations in the workplace. If an employee approaches you about a situation, rather than brush him off, take time to listen to his concern and be open to suggestions for improving workplace productivity or morale.
