How to Extract Chrome Bookmarks

Chrome is Google's Web browser for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. Initially released in December 2008, Google follows a "release early, release often" philosophy with the browser, pushing updates nearly every six weeks, at the time of publication, with release No. 12. Bookmarks are the sites you save for quicker access between browsing sessions, rather than typing in the full URL constantly. Exporting your Chrome bookmarks allows you to save a backup, as well as use the Hyper Text Markup Language file to import your bookmarks into another browser, should you decide to use Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari. The process is quick and simple and can save you a lot of time and headaches in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open Google Chrome.

    • 2

Click the wrench icon in the toolbar, select "Bookmark Manager."

    • 3

      Click "Organize," then "Export Bookmarks."

    • 4

Select a folder on your computer to save the exported bookmarks in an HTML file, click "Save."

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep the created HTML file in a secure location for safekeeping. If you decide to switch browsers, locate the browser's bookmark "Import" function and select Chrome's HTML file. Once properly imported, all your Chrome bookmarks are available in the new browser. This is also beneficial should you have to reinstall Chrome.

  • Importing your bookmarks into another browser may, but not definitely overwrite the browser's current bookmarks. Refer to the browser's "Help" files for clarification regarding importing and exporting bookmarks.
