How to Cut Wood Stringers

Wood stringers are used when constructing decks or other outdoor walkways. The stringers are installed at each end of the stairs, and treads are installed on top of them to act as the stairs. Stringers come in all different sizes, ranging from seven steps down to three steps. They often need to be cut to size for a deck. Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the stringer at the desired cut location with a tape measure and pencil. Draw a line straight across the stringer with a pencil at the proper distance. Lay the stringer on a flat and steady surface with the pencil mark facing up.

    • 2

Line up the blade of a circular saw with the mark on the stringer. Put on safety glasses for proper protection when you are cutting the stringer. Hold the stringer in place with your non-dominant hand and grip the saw with your dominant hand.

    • 3

Turn on the saw and run it along the pencil mark on the stringer. Cut straight along the mark until you have cut through the entire stringer. Turn off the saw and separate the stringer into the two pieces you cut.

    • 4

Measure the piece and verify that you cut it to the proper size. Line it up running from the ground to the deck and check that it fits properly. Repeat the process for the second stringer and make sure they are the exact same size before installing them to the deck.
