How to Identify the Width on a Triangle
To complete specific mathematical calculations on geometric figures you need to know the measurements of some or all of the angles and sides of the figure. For example, if you're trying to find the area of a triangle, you'll need to know the base and height measurements of the triangle because the formula for calculating the area is base times height divided by two. Sometimes math problems will call one of the sides the width, which can be confusing since the formulas you use likely won't use a width figure. Identifying the width is very simple, however.

1
Place the book or the piece of paper the triangle is in or on right side up. You can determine this by looking at the orientation of the wording and other images in the book or on the paper.
-
2
Orient the piece of paper so that the line at the bottom of the triangle is running horizontally, if there are no cues as to the correct orientation of the triangle.

3
Look to the line that forms the bottom of the triangle. This line is called the width of the triangle. It is also know as the base and sometimes the length.
