How to Help Children Become Self-Sufficient

Children typically prefer to do as much as possible on their own. If parents do not take the opportunity to encourage this, then the children will become accustomed to letting parents do everything for them. As the child becomes an adult, she lacks the ability to do the things that she needs to support herself. Skills like comparing prices at the grocery store, balancing a checkbook or doing laundry become overwhelming. It is up to parents to teach their children to prepare them to be self-sufficient.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow your child to try things that may be difficult. This can include allowing a three year old to set the table or help fold laundry. Take care to keep the activities safe, but give the child a chance to expand her horizons.

    • 2

Encourage your child to step out of her comfort zone. This can include balancing a checkbook as he gets older, or mowing the lawn by himself.

    • 3

Teach your child how the skill she needs to function as an adult. As she reaches high school teach her to do laundry, comparison shop and negotiate prices on big ticket items like her first car.
