Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area where the subfloor is rotten from the basement of your house. Inspect the subfloor in the entire area and determine if the subfloor in the entire room will need to be replaced, or just a certain area.

    • 2

Pull up all the carpeting or other type of flooring on top of the subfloor. Start in one corner of the room and work toward the other. Grip the carpet with hammer. Pry up on the edge of the carpet with the back of a hammer and pull the carpet up.

    • 3

Grip the carpet with both hands and pull it off of the staples or other adhesive holding it in place. Continue pulling in the same manner until the carpet is completely removed and the subfloor underneath is clearly visible. Set the carpet aside for future use after the subfloor is replaced.

    • 4

Locate all of the screws holding the rotted subfloor in place and remove them with a power drill. Set the pieces of rotted subfloor outside as you remove them and continue around the room until the subfloor is completely gone. Inspect the joists underneath and verify there are not more screws drilled into any of them.

    • 5

Set the first piece of sheathing at any corner of the room and screw it into the joists just like you installed the previous subfloor. Butt the second piece up to the first and install it in the same manner. Continue around the room until the subfloor is completely installed.

    • 6

Lay the carpet back on top of the subfloor and staple it in place with a staple gun around the entire perimeter of the room. Insert the staples directly into the subfloor underneath until the carpet is securely in place.
