A sash is “any belt of soft material that loops over and ties in a knot or bow rather than a buckling.” Sashes can be made from many different kinds of fabrics, satin, lace, organza, tulle, grosgrain ribbon, even soft leather. Sashes can be solid, patterned, plain or beaded. It can add color to a wedding dress, add interest to a prom dress, dress up a sundress, bring out the waist on a boxy dress and even add style to a tunic shirt.
Back tie
Fold the sash in half widthwise. The end of the fold is the center of the sash.
Place the center of the sash on the front center of your waist.
Wrap the ends around your waist and cross them behind your back. Be careful to keep the sides straight as you do this.
Take the end that is on top and push it under and over the bottom sash to tie a knot. Pull it firmly.
Tie another knot or a bow. Make adjustments as needed.
Side tie
Fold the sash in half widthwise. The end of the fold is the center of the sash.
Place the center of the sash on your side, at the waist, above one of your hips.
Wrap the end around your waist and cross them in the front above your other hip. Be careful to keep the sides straight as you do this.
Take the end that is on top and push it under and over the bottom sash to tie a knot. Pull it firmly.
Tie another knot or a bow. Make adjustments as needed.
Double-wrap sash
Fold the sash in half widthwise. The end of the fold is the center of the sash.
Place the center of the sash, toward your front on your waist above one of your hips.
Wrap the end around your waist and cross them behind your back. Be careful to keep the sides straight as you do this.
Wrap the end around your waist again and cross them cross them in front of yourself above the same hip.
Take the end that is on top and push it under and over the bottom sash to tie a knot. Pull it firmly.
Tie another knot or a bow. Make adjustments as needed.
Tip
If the sash is made of a silkier material, you can add a safety pin from underneath through the bow to keep it from slipping out.
To have a long hanging bow, you need a sash that is at least 24 inches longer than your waist size. You can make a sash out of some long scarves.
All of these methods of tying can be used on a hip sash, as well.
If you have trouble tying behind your back, tie the knot or bow in front of you and turn it around after you are done.
