How to Press Leather

Turn a plain piece of leather into a work of art by pressing letters and other designs into it.

Pressing leather is the process of engraving or stamping an image onto a piece of leather. This project will require the use of a leather stamp, which allows you to make an impression of letters to spell a name or other word into a piece of leather.

Things You'll Need

• Wood block
• Leather stamping kit
• Wood mallet

Instructions

1. Place the leather that you want to stamp over the wood block. Measure the placement of the letters or symbols with the ruler.

2. Set the first letter from the leather stamping kit in place on the leather. Verify that the alignment mark is facing in the proper direction. Attach the handle to the letter stamp.

3. Strike the top of the handle with the wood mallet. Repeat this step two to three more times to produce a good impression on the leather.

4. Repeat this process to spell a name or to imprint a symbol onto the leather.
