How to Become a Child's Godparent

A godparent traditionally stands with the family during the child's baptism.

Becoming a child's godparent is a serious commitment and great honor. While not a legally binding arrangement, it means that you accept the task of guiding the child morally. Rules for godparents vary greatly depending on the religious practices of the family. It's important to understand what can qualify you as a godparent and meet those requirements. Beyond that, leading a good life will hopefully show the child's family that you would make an ideal godparent.

Instructions

1. Meet the church's requirements for becoming a godparent. If the family belongs to a church, it might have strict requirements for godparents. For example, the Catholic church will only recognize practicing Catholics as a child's godparent. If you're not currently a member of the family's church, you might need to officially join. Families who are not religious, however, might not have these types of requirements.

2. Lead a moral life. Be conscious in your actions and words. Lead the type of life that the child's parents would like the child to emulate.

3. Express your desire to the child's parents. Knowing that you want to take on the duty can push the vote in your favor. Rather than dropping hints, take the time to tell the parents before the baby is born that you're hoping to be a godparent.

4. Participate in any formal ceremony, if necessary. In many cases, you'll have to participate in a church ceremony where you'll take an oath to guide the child. This typically occurs within the first few weeks after birth.
