If are an author wanting to promote your book, or even if you are simply an expert on a subject and want to share your knowledge with an audience, booking a public speaking event can be very rewarding for you. In order be successful in getting companies and organizations interested in your presentation, you must make yourself stand out from the crowd. Create a presentation that entertains and engages the audience, instead of simply coming off as a sales pitch for your book or company.

      Assemble a press kit in both hard copy and electronic formats, promoting yourself as a public speaker. Include items such as a video clip of yourself giving speeches in the past, your resume, applicable press releases and recommendations from people who have hired you and listened to you speak in the past, if possible.

      Research companies and organizations that would be relevant for you to speak at. If you're just starting out, you can try local places such as libraries, bookstores and churches. If you have more experience as a speaker, try for larger organizations, conferences and colleges.

      Send your press kit to all organizations that you are interested in speaking at. Find out who the contact person for the organization is, and address it to her personally. This will ensure that it gets in the hands of a person who will review it.

      Follow up with a phone call to the person that you sent your press kit to a few days after they should have received it. This will put your submission on his radar and will give you a chance to answer any questions he might have about your presentation.

      Present yourself as someone with a flexible schedule. You are more likely to be offered a speaking engagement if you are able to work around the schedule of the organization instead of expecting them to work around you.
