How to Join the Elks

The Elks lodge boasts a membership of nearly 1 million members in 2,000 lodges around the United States, as of publication. Its organization focuses on four principles: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. It was first established in 1868 to promote these four principles. The Lodge spends over $80 million on community oriented programs and functions. Becoming a member requires certain procedures be followed, including an application and sponsorship by an existing member of the Elk lodge.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet the requirements. To become an Elk, you must have reached the age of 21 and be a citizen of the United States of America.

    • 2

Find an Elk. Before you can apply for Elk membership, you must be sponsored by an existing member of the Lodge.

    • 3

Find two additional Elks as references. This is not typically difficult, as your sponsor will be able to find someone to serve in this capacity.

    • 4

Complete the application. Your sponsor will complete one section, while you fill out the rest. Once completed, return the application to the lodge with any required fees. The fees will vary based on the requirements of that particular lodge.

    • 5

Sit for an interview with the investigating committee. Your sponsor is also allowed to attend the meeting. Once the interview is concluded, the committee will make a recommendation, and the lodge will vote on your candicacy. The waiting period can be up to two months.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are accepted, you and your wife will be invited to the lodge to learn more about its customs and to discuss your indoctrination date.

  • If you are denied for membership, you must wait at least six months before applying again.
