Potential models can be found anywhere if you know how to spot them.

Potential supermodels don't always just walk into an agency and ask for an audition. Kate Moss was spotted waiting for a flight at an airport. Tyson Beckford was discovered walking in Washington Square Park. By following a few simple, proven model-scouting techniques, you may find the next Heidi Klum hiding in plain sight.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the standards for the modeling industry. There are different requirements for petite models, runway models and print models. Peruse fashion magazines and attend fashion shows to get a good idea as to what modeling agencies look for in terms of bodily and facial features.

    • 2

Look around your own local area for potential models with alluring, striking or exotically beautiful features and attractive physiques. They can be located in malls, charity fashion shows, beauty pageants, gas stations and high school sporting events, among other places. If the model is under the age of 18, make sure you get her parents' signed permission before you start working with her.

    • 3

Attend modeling competitions and review websites where potential models post their pictures. If necessary, take a cross-country road trip to scout models in other cities.

    • 4

If scouting for potential fashion models, keep in mind that the industry has certain requirements for height, measurements, age and dress size. Generally, female fashion models should be between 5'9 and 6' in height, wear a size 6 and range between 14 and 21 years of age. Standards will differ for plus-sized models.

Build a professional relationship with a talented photographer willing to perform test shoots at affordable rates to build up your model's portfolio.

Tips & Warnings

  • When approaching a potential model, present a legitimate business card and behave in a professional manner to ensure that she doesn't perceive you as a security threat.
