How to Make a Betta Plant Bowl
Bettas are carnivorous fish, and though they cannot live off the roots or leaves of a plant, they do well in a bowl or vase with a plant in it. The plant gives the bowl some visual variety and it also gives the betta some shade and some stalks to hide behind. Create a plant bowl for your betta to swim in.
Things You'll Need
- 3 to 5 gallon bowl
- Aquarium gravel
- Dechlorinated water
- Aponogeton bulbs
- Cup
- Mesh fish net
Instructions

1
Line the bottom of a 3 to 5 gallon bowl with 1 inch of aquarium gravel.
-
2
Fill the bowl about four-fifths of the way to the top with dechlorinated water.
-
-
3
Drop one or two aponogeton bulbs into the bowl. Aponogeton bulbs are a type of water lily, and they put out leaves and stalks in a matter of days. They do not need to be buried in the gravel. They are often sold as betta bulbs in pet stores.
-
4
Set the betta in its current container next to the bowl for 15 minutes. This allows the betta to get used to the temperature where the bowl is.
-
5
Scoop some of the water out of the bowl with a cup and pour it in the bag or cup where your betta is being kept.
-
6
Wait 1 hour.
-
7
Scoop the betta from its temporary home into the newly planted bowl.

Tips & Warnings
Bettas are jumpers, so place a plastic mesh lid or a weighted piece of plastic canvas over the top of the bowl.
Trim the aponogeton plant's leaves when they look yellow or rotted, as they can pollute the water.
