Instructions

    • 1

Collect the correct amount of barley straw for your pond. You need 225 pounds per acre of pond water. This equals roughly five bales.

    • 2

Break up each bale of barley straw and pack each bale loosely into an open mesh bag. This will allow oxygen and water to circulate through the barley more freely.

    • 3

Select the locations in the pond where you want to place the barley bales. The spots should be between 4 to 5 feet deep and should be in the path of moving water, such as the base of a waterfall or in an eddy.

    • 4

Push garden stakes into the soil on the bank at the spots where you want to put the bales. Tie a string to the top of the mesh bags, then tie the string to the garden stake to keep the bales in place. Do this in early spring, before algae blooms begin.

    • 5

Remove the old barley after 6 months and replace it with fresh barley.
