How to Resize C Into Unallocated Space

With the introduction of Windows Vista, Microsoft included the ability to shrink and extend partitions in the Disk Management utility. This allows users to resize their drives without having to reformat, and thus losing the contained data. Previously, this was only capable via third-party applications. In order extend the C: drive, there must be free, unused (unallocated) space.

      Open the Start menu, right-click "Computer," then select "Manage."

      Select "Storage" in the sidebar, then "Disk Management."

      Right-click the C: drive, and select "Extend Volume..."

    • 4

      Enter the amount of megabytes you wish to extend the drive by. This is limited by the amount of unallocated space. Click "Next," then "Extend."
