Emotional attachment is a key element in building loyalty.

Employees who have an emotional investment in an organization will contribute much more wholeheartedly to its success than those who are just in the position to draw a paycheck. While money can be a powerful motivator, it doesn't build loyalty. If you want to inspire your employees to buy in emotionally to what you want them to do, you will need to come up with a way to move them. This will be easier in some professions than in others, as educators may tend to be more emotional than engineers, but you can build loyalty in all industries.

      Identify elements of your organization's philosophy or mission statement that either are important to the bulk of your employees, or would be the most important to most people in general. In a larger company, you may not know what motivates your workers individually, so you'll be painting in larger strokes. Use those elements as your primary themes or ideas.

      Develop a multimedia component that highlights these themes or ideas. This could be a slideshow backed by music with pictures of your employees living out your mission statement, as well as images from popular culture that exemplify your organization's goals.

      Write a short speech (20 to 30 minutes maximum) highlighting the steps your organization has taken in the past to meet various challenges, using its philosophy or mission statement. Take the time to remind your employees that your organization has many accomplishments in which they should take pride. Then, move to a discussion of challenges that the group faces, and wind up with a declaration that you know that the employees you have will take your organization to even greater heights.

  • Even in an emotional speech, you will start to lose your employees' attention after 20 to 30 minutes.
