How to Match Colors for Fabric
If you have ever wanted to match a new sewing project to existing clothes, furnishings or quilts, then you know that it can be frustrating trying to find the exact color you need. In an ideal situation, you would take your already purchased fabric or project to a fabric shop, match the color needed to a bolt of fabric and purchase as much new fabric that is needed. Sometimes, though, the store does not carry the exact shades you need, or one manufacturer's Sunny Yellow is another manufacturer's Lemon Yellow, and you require another way to match your fabric.

Mark the manufacturer, name of fabric color and color code, or pattern, and style number for each fabric you purchase. This information is found printed on the cardboard center piece at the top of the bolt of fabric. When you are looking for more matching fabric, use this information to find a match at your local fabric shop or online.

Match to the dye markers. If your piece of fabric is large, at least a yard or more, you may have a series of dots printed along the selvage end. These are the manufacturer's dye markers. Each dot represents a color used in the fabric's pattern. Use the dye markers to find other prints or solids that match the colors in your fabric.

Utilize a fabric matching service. Services like Moda's Fabricmatcher program let you browse and select a base fabric from dozens of fabric designers, then the program will suggest matching fabrics. You can also use the color matcher by choosing the color of your fabric from a color chart, after which the program suggests matching fabrics. Finally, you can upload an image to the program. The image matcher then selects matching and complementary fabrics.

Tips & Warnings
Colors may vary slightly on different bolts, even on fabrics from the same manufacturer with the same name or style number. To be safe, buy more fabric than you think you will need for your project.
