How to Make Submenus in Joomla!

Joomla! organizes menus using the Menu Item Manager. It assigns each menu item a position within the menu based on whether the menu item is a parent item or a child item, and by the order assigned to it by the administrator. You can assign menu items as sub-menu items using the Menu Item Manager by creating new menu items or editing existing menu items. Access the Menu Item Manager by clicking on the menu you want to edit under the "Menus" option in the back-end administrator.

Instructions

    • 1

Point the mouse at the "Menus" option in the back-end administrator menu. Click on the menu from the drop-down list that requires sub-menus. Joomla! will open the Menu Item Manager for editing the menu items and creating new ones.

    • 2

Click "New" to create a new menu item and Joomla! will open the "Menu Item New / Edit" form. Select the menu item type from the list, and enter the menu item information including the item name.

    • 3

Look for the "Parent" list in the Menu Item Details section on the left side. The first item "Top" or "Home" is the default. Click on any other menu item to select it as the parent item.

    • 4

Click "Save" in the Menu Item Manager menu. Joomla! will save the new menu item and return to the list of menu items for the menu selected.

    • 5

Click on "Preview" above the Menu Item Manager menu to display your website. Click on the item selected as the parent item and the new sub-menu item will be displayed. If you assign more than one item as a child to the same parent, those items appear as a list of sub-menu items.

Tips & Warnings

  • Menu item organization is important and can affect how search engines rank your pages. Set up your menu structure carefully and use care when making changes to it, since search engines crawl your site and index what they find. If you make frequent changes to the menus, the search engines won't know where your pages are.

  • To assign a current menu item as a child or sub-menu item, click on it to edit it and select its parent item from the "Parent" list as shown above and save it.
