How to Make a Mermaid Tail Step-by-Step

Make your own mermaid tail for swimming.

Creating a water-safe mermaid tail requires only a few basic sewing materials and a monofin. Using nylon-Lycra material helps to keep the tail lightweight even after being submerged in water. This material is available in a variety of colors and prints. Monofins are available online and in most swim gear stores. This craft project will make a mermaid tail suitable for an adult or a child.

Things You'll Need

• 3 yards nylon-Lycra fabric
• Monofin
• Heavy duty matching thread
• Swimming elastic
• Pattern paper
• Measuring tape
• Scissors
• Large sewing needle

Steb-by-Step Instructions on Making a Mermaid Tail

1. Use measuring tape to take the following measurements: Waist to ankles, hips, knees together and ankles together. Use these measurements to mark the pattern paper. Connect dots and draw in the shape of a mermaid tail.

2. Use pins to attach fabric to the pattern paper. Cut out the pattern you have drawn on the paper. Remove pins and separate the material from the paper. Repeat these steps using another piece of fabric.

3. Place both pieces of fabric together so that when sewn the pieces are inside out. Pin around the edges. Use a threaded needle to stitch along the edges, leaving only the waist line open. Remove the pins.

4. Cut the elastic strip to the same measurement as the waist line. Align elastic with the top of the waist line of the material. Fold material down to cover the elastic and use pins to secure. Use a sewing needle and thread to stitch around the waist line. Remove the pins.

5. Turn the material right side out. Insert the monofin into the tail, through the waist line. The monofin can be removed so that the material can be washed after use.
