1
Choose a theme: the theme will inspire the decorations. For instance, if the theme is something like "Around the U.S.A." featuring chili recipes based on the flavors of different regions, then the party will need to be decorated accordingly. Remember when you are drawing up a floor plan to keep theme categories or divisions in mind.

2
Purchase accessories, or make your own. Go to a party-planning store or visit one online, and buy tablecloths, plates, silverware and other accessories. Keep the theme in mind when you are making your purchases. Some accessories that never fail are inflatable cacti and any decorations featuring chili peppers. Alternatively, cut out chili peppers from bright red and green paper or poster board. If the theme is something exotic, like "Chili Luau," then you will need corresponding accessories, such as fake palm trees and coconuts, or leis made of flowers and chili peppers.

Drape strings of lights around the room. Chili-pepper lights are available, but strings of red and green Christmas lights will add the appropriate flavor too. If the cook-off is to be held outside, make sure you have taken proper precaution against the elements. Have a canopy or tent ready if need be.

Ask the contestants and other attendees to dress up for the occasion. The best decorations are the people themselves. Make sure everyone knows the theme, so they can dress appropriately.
