How to Sew a Lining

Lining a piece stabilizes the fabric and creates an extra layer of protection. The lining can be cut from the same fabric as the piece or in the case of garments, from a lighter weight fabric. Use fabrics specifically made for lining, or use a lightweight cotton for comfort next to the skin. For bags and purses, use a heavier weight fabric to protect the bag, or interface a lightweight fabric to add protection and help the bag keep its shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the lining pieces to match the piece it is lining. If you have a sewing pattern, use the same pattern pieces to cut out the lining as you did for the piece. If you do not have pattern pieces, trace the piece to be lined with chalk on the fabric and cut out the lining piece.

Pin the piece together, holding the right sides together.

    • 3

Sew the pieces together using your sewing machine or hand-stitch the pieces together. Sew using a quarter-inch seam unless otherwise specified by the pattern. Use a small tight stitch and leave one end open. For hand sewing, slip stitch the seam closed by threading the needle, pulling it up through the first side and then pushing it down though the fabric to the back. Repeat this, making each stitch a quarter-inch away and continuing until the seam is closed. Knot off the thread and cut.

Turn the piece right side out.
