DIY: Fireman Stencils

DIY: Fireman Stencils thumbnail
Draw firemen with ease with your homemade stencils.

A child who is interested in firefighting will love to be able to re-create scenes of firemen with stencils. It's easy to make fireman stencils with a few simple supplies you probably already have in your home. Work with your child to pick out designs, then watch them come to life as your child draws. Fireman stencils can also be used by adults for scrap-booking or for decorating a school bulletin board for fire-safety day, so these stencils can be used again and again.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what fireman images you want to make stencils of, and place tracing paper on top of your chosen design. Use masking tape to lightly tape the tracing paper securely over the design. This will prevent the tracing paper from sliding around while you work. Use a pencil to trace the outline of the design.

    • 2

Lay the tracing paper with pencil outline over a piece of poster board. Tape it down and re-trace the design. Press very hard on the pencil or pen so that an indentation of the design is made on the poster board. Remove the tracing paper. If you can't see an indentation, align the tracing paper with the poster board and go over the image again.

    • 3

Use a utility knife to carefully cut out the traced design on the poster board, being sure to cut the edges smoothly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fireman images can be found easily online or in coloring books.

  • Be sure the designs you choose are simple, since intricate details can get lost in the tracing and cutting process. Some good ideas to start are a fireman's hat, an axe, flames or a hose.

  • Utility knives should only be used by adults since the blade is unsafe for children.
