Dealing with a boss that is a perfectionist is very challenging and exhausting. Employees who have bosses that are perfectionists often feel that they can do nothing to please the boss, which leaves them feeling frustrated and exasperated. If you can relate to these feelings, there are certain approaches you can take, and things you can do, to help alleviate the worries and frustration caused by this. Each particular approach may help your boss relax a little bit, and might help you meet your boss's expectations in an easier way.

Instructions

    • 1

Be punctual. The first step in dealing with a perfectionist boss is to try to give him fewer reasons to be upset. Showing up on time for work is one simple action that a perfectionist boss appreciates. This includes coming to work on time, showing up for meeting on time and leaving when your shift is over, and not a minute sooner.

    • 2

Be prepared. The act of being prepared will often please a perfectionist boss. Take notes during meetings, bring the appropriate documents when needed and be where you should be at the right time.

    • 3

Ask questions. Many employees try to avoid being a nag by not asking questions. If something is unclear to you, it is better to ask for more information or clarity before completing an assignment or duty. This also prepares you to complete a job the right way, the first time. A perfectionist boss will appreciate a job well done.

    • 4

Compliment your boss. Most perfectionists are relatively insecure and enjoy having their egos nursed. Offer a small compliment here and there to give him reassurance that he is doing a good job.

    • 5

Avoid taking things personally. Perfectionist bosses may throw meaningless words and criticisms around, which can offend many people. Do not take these things personally. If a perfectionist boss is having a bad day, simply ignore silly things he says and realize that no matter how good you are at your job, he will most likely always find something to nitpick.

    • 6

Double-check your work. Before sending documents or work to your boss's desk, proofread it to make sure there are no errors.

    • 7

Watch for details. People who are perfectionists notice all details, big or small. Keep this frame of mind as well when you complete your work or a special project.
