Microsoft created the .chm file format for the Windows help system.

Microsoft designed the .chm (Compiled HTML Help) file format to store help files for the Windows operating system. A .chm file consists of an HTML page, a table of contents and an index, all compressed and compiled into a single file. Readers can view the help files using a CHM reader and can navigate through the content by clicking on hyperlinks. Although CHM readers are available for many operating systems, you may want to extract the raw HTML files, for conversion to another format for example. Using Ubuntu, you can convert a .chm file to HTML with the libCHM package.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect to the remote Ubuntu server using SSH, or open a terminal window if you are at the computer itself.

    • 2

Type "sudo apt-get install libchm-bin" at the terminal prompt to install the libCHM converter. Type in your password when requested by the sudo command, which is used to install libCHM with root privileges.

    • 3

Change to the directory containing the CHM file using the cd command. To change to a directory named "help," type "cd help" at the terminal prompt.

    • 4

Type "extract_chmLib file.chm output-directory" at the terminal prompt, where "file.chm" is the name of the .chm file you are converting, and "output-directory" is the directory to store the extracted HTML files. For example:

      extract_chmLib example.chm /home/html

The conversion process is quick and produces a number of HTML files in the chosen directory that can be viewed in a Web browser.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can convert the HTML files extracted from a .chm file to a PDF using the htmldoc package, available from the Ubuntu repository and installed using the "apt-get" command.
