How to Use a Black Rit Brand Tint & Dye

Give new life to your faded black clothes by dyeing them with black Rit dye. Rit is an all-purpose dye which works on both animal and plant fibers. You can dye cotton, linen and hemp in hot water with agitation, or dye wool yarn if you don't agitate the dye bath or dry it in a hot dryer. You can also use Rit to dye white or light-colored fabric black. It might take several attempts, but if you use the liquid formula you can often achieve darker results with a single dye bath.

Instructions

    • 1

Hand wash the fabric you want to dye in order to remove any dirt, chemicals or machine oil from the spinning process. Leave the fabric dripping wet. You can dye up to one pound of fabric with a single dye bath.

    • 2

Boil two quarts of water in a large pot that you do not plan to use for cooking food.

    • 3

Turn the heat down to a simmer and add one bottle of liquid black Rit dye. Stir the dye bath for 30 seconds with a wooden or plastic spoon.

    • 4

Add the fabric to the dye bath. Stir the fabric around for five to 10 minutes to saturate it with dye.

    • 5

Leave the fabric in the simmering dye bath for one hour, stirring every 10 minutes.

    • 6

Pour the dye bath, including the fabric, into the sink. Rinse the fabric with warm water, and then cool water, for at least five minutes or until the water runs clear.

    • 7

Dry the fabric in a hot dryer to set the dye.

Tips & Warnings

  • The color of the fabric when you first remove it from the dye bath is significantly darker than the final result will be. For the best results, purchase at least two bottles of liquid black Rit dye and repeat the dyeing process.
