A well-fitting Stetson will move easily when you need to adjust it.

The Stetson is a renowned piece of millinery that is most easily recognized when perched atop the head of a cowboy on a ride. Whether you are a wrangler for a living or you want to simply dress the part, a Stetson will finish off your look perfectly as long as you have a good fit. A too-large hat will not only look silly, it will also be uncomfortable for you to wear for any length of time. Luckily there is an inexpensive and discreet way to reduce extra space in the crown and make your Stetson set correctly. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the Stetson over and locate the inner brim running around the inside of the hat. Gently pull on the brim until it flips down all around the crown. The brim is also called the sweatband and is the area that circles your head while you are wearing the Stetson.

    • 2

Apply a short piece of insulating tape along the inside of the folded-down brim, at the back of the hat. You will apply the tape in short sections until you get the best fit. Make sure the tape doesn't extend past the edge of the brim or it will be seen when you turn the brim up.

    • 3

Turn the brim back up inside the hat and place the Stetson on your head. Position the hat both directly on top of your head and tipped slightly back towards the back of your head. You need to determine if the hat is sitting well on your head.

    • 4

Take off the hat and pull down the brim again. Add more strips of tape along the brim wherever the hat felt loose. So, if the Stetson feels down too far on your forehead, add some tape along the brim above the forehead to help the hat sit properly.

    • 5

Place the hat stretcher inside the crown of the Stetson and slowly expand it. Stop increasing the length of the stretcher as soon as the tips of the tool are touching the brim inside the crown. Store your hat this way when you're not wearing it to maintain the shape and fit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to buy your Stetson in person or in a shop where you can send a picture of your head in order to get the best fit.

  • Don't stretch a too-small hat, because the wool or felt will gradually shrink back to the original size and won't stay stretched.
