Toolbars in Photoshop indicate shortcuts in parentheses when you hover over a control.

Grunge brushes are used in many graphic-design programs to distress and add personality to images. Adobe Photoshop offers a wide variety of native grunge brushes, but a custom look can be created by downloading additional brushes or creating your own brush. Photoshop allows users to apply brushes in many ways to achieve most any desired look.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all layers other than the image to which you are adding an effect. To do this, select the "Layers" option on the right side of the Photoshop interface and deselect additional layers by clicking the box to the left of each.

    • 2

Create a new layer by selecting "Create a new layer" at the bottom of the "Layers" pane.

    • 3

Select your "Brush" tool by clicking the paintbrush in the toolbar or by pressing the "B" key on your keyboard.

    • 4

Return to the "Layers" pane on the right and select the new layer that you created. After it is selected, it will be highlighted in blue. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the "Layers" pane to select a new blend mode. Choose "Soft :ight" from the options.

    • 5

Confirm that your foreground selection is black by checking the squares at the bottom of the toolbar. The front square should be black; if it is not, click the box and select black as the color.

    • 6

Open the Brushes pane by clicking "Brushes" in the upper left corner of the Photoshop interface. Select a brush. You will see your brush in place of the cursor on the screen.

    • 7

Press the "right bracket" key on your keyboard to increase the size of the brush. Do this until the brush is about the size of the photo.
