How to Properly Place a Flag on a Stage

Treat the U.S. flag with respect at all times.

Displaying an American flag comes with a historical set of rules. While U.S. Flag Code is only advisory, rules and guidelines are established to ensure proper handling and presentation of the flag. Properly placing a flag on a stage, for example, demands precision and order. Be careful how you handle the flag. Wearing the stars and stripes as an article of clothing, for instance, or situating the flag where it touches anything beneath it -- such as a table top or the ground -- is a cardinal flag code sin.

Instructions

    • 1

Situate the flag stage right. In other words, position the flag to the presenter's right and the audience's left. Doing so puts the stars and stripes in a power position and audiences in the posture of "bearing" the flag.

Arrange the flags in order. Place the American flag nearest to the presenter. Set other national flags stage right of the American flag and state flags stage right of other national flags. Set supplementary flags -- religious flags, for instance -- stage right of state flags.

    • 3

Angle flags vertically in flag stands. Twist the flag so it drapes open -- to the audience's left -- at an outward, 45-degree angle.
