How to Tie a Kentucky Rig

Various rigs are used to catch different species of game fish. Carolina and Texas rigs are often used by anglers to present live and artificial baits. The Kentucky rig is another option that is especially beneficial to catfish anglers. Similar to the high-low rig used by surf fishers, the Kentucky rig allows for the presentation of two baits in the water to increase the chances of successfully hooking a fish.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 5-foot length of 50-lb. test monofilament fishing line from a filler spool. Use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the line to use for making the Kentucky leader rig.

    • 2

Tie a barrel swivel to one end of the 5-foot length of line with a Uni knot. Moisten the knot and pull tight against the eye of the swivel.

    • 3

Measure 4 inches down the line from the barrel swivel. Tie a dropper loop in the line. Adjust the size of the loop so it is 6 inches long.

    • 4

Measure 15 inches down the line and tie another dropper loop. Adjust the loop so it is 6 inches long.

    • 5

Measure 15 inches down the line from the last dropper loop and attach a swivel snap with a Uni knot. Attach a 2-oz. or heavier bank weight to the snap. Adjust the amount of weight used on the bottom of the rig up or down based on fishing conditions and personal preference.

    • 6

Attach a circle hook to the top dropper loop. Insert the loop through the eye of the hook. Pull the loop around the bend of the hook. Pull the loop tight against the eye of the hook. Repeat the process for the second dropper loop.
