How to Make a Mantilla Head Covering

How to Make a Mantilla Head Covering thumbnail
A wedding veil is a special occasion mantilla.

Mantillas, which are commonly made of lace and worn on a woman's head as a cover over her hair, are traditionally used during times of prayer, including prayer at home and at a church. They are also worn for ceremonies such as weddings and first communions. Mantilla head coverings can be made in a variety of sizes, depending on the length of a woman's hair and how much she desires to cover. This mantilla will cover shoulder-length hair.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the rectangle of lace fabric flat on a smooth work surface.

    • 2

Line up the lace trim along the edge of one side of the rectangle. Fold the edge of the rectangle over to create a 1/8-inch hem. Use the straight pins to pin the lace trim on top of the hem as you are pinning the hem down. The tip of the lace trim should begin at one corner of the rectangle. Use the scissors to cut the lace trim even with the next corner. You should have lace trim pinned across one side of the rectangle.

    • 3

Continue folding a 1/8-inch hem and lining up the lace trim along each of the sides of the rectangle. Use straight pins to hold the lace trim in place and cut the lace trim at each corner so that each side of the rectangle is bordered by a piece of lace trim.

    • 4

Place the fabric and lace trim on the sewing machine. Use a straight stitch to hem the lace fabric while also securing the lace trim to the fabric. Remove straight pins before they encounter the sewing needle.

    • 5

Cut thread and remove from sewing machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a mantilla large enough to cover waist length hair, use a 50-inch wide by 30-inch long rectangle of lace fabric and 5 1/2 yards of lace trim.

  • If you do not have a sewing machine, the mantilla can be hand sewn.

  • Keep scissors and needles away from children.
