How Do I Hem a Blanket Corner?
Home sewn blankets can be thoughtful, practical and beautiful gifts for family and friends. With so many fabric types and prints available, homemade blankets can be made to match the particular interests and style of the recipient. For a homemade blanket that has a professional finish, you will need to neatly hem the blanket sides, including corners. By taking the time to press and carefully stitch, you will create a blanket you can proudly present to a new baby or keep to use in your own home.

Instructions

1
Use the clothing iron to press the piece of fabric smooth, paying special attention to the edges of the fabric.
-
2
Use the ruler as a guide to fold down 1/4 inch of one side of the fabric. Fold it over again and use straight pins to hold the fold in place.
-
-
3
Use the iron to press the fold down.
-
4
Use the ruler as a guide to fold down 1/4 inch of one of the sides of fabric that meets with the already folded and pressed side. Fold the side over again and use straight pins to hold the fabric in place. You should see one corner with no rough edges where the two folded sides overlap.
-
5
Use the iron to press the fold down.
-
6
Repeat the procedure of folding each individual side of the blanket over 1/4 inch and then over 1/4 inch again. Pin the folded sides in place. Each corner should have two folded sides overlapping, and no rough edges should be exposed. Use the iron to press down each folded side.
-
7
Place the pinned section of the fabric on the sewing machine. Begin at one corner of the blanket and sew a straight stitch along the hem. Remove straight pins before they encounter the sewing needle.
-
8
Continue sewing until you reach the folded-over hem of the next side of the blanket. Stitch one stitch over the next side's folded hem. Do not stitch all the way to the blanket's edge.
-
9
Lift the presser foot and turn the blanket 90 degrees so the hem of the next side of the blanket is lined up with the sewing needle. Push down the presser foot and continue stitching.
-
10
Use the same method of placing one stitch beyond the next side's folded hem, lifting the presser foot, rotating the blanket 90 degrees and pushing the presser foot back down for each of the blanket's corners.
-
11
Place two backstitches to secure thread. Cut the thread and remove from machine.
