Information can be exchanged between these two computers if one is running a Telnet server.

Telnet is a network protocol available across both the Internet and local networks, although it is primarily used on local networks due to security vulnerabilities. Telnet is used to communicate back and forth between two computers or nodes with basic text, most commonly to check statistics or get other various information. The default port for Telnet communications is 23, but other ports can be used.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your systems administrator to see what other ports are set up for Telnet to use. By default, 23 is Telnet's port of choice, but others are typically enabled.

    • 2

Click "Start" and then "Run." In the pop-up that appears, type "cmd" and press "Enter."

    • 3

In the command prompt, type "telnet" followed by the IP to which you would you like to connect, followed directly by a colon (:) and the port number that your administrator gave you.
