How to Show NEF Files on the Desktop
Nikon digital cameras use the Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) to save digital photos in a high-resolution format with very little processing, giving professional and amateur photographers alike high-quality raw photos. These digital negatives store all the data the camera captures with either no compression or very little compression. Viewing these photos on your desktop can be tricky, however, as Windows does not natively have the ability to open NEF files. Nikon provides a free utility on its website that will give you the ability to view NEF photos.

Download and install the NEF Codec from the Nikon website.

Reboot your computer when prompted.

Double-click an NEF file. Windows Photo Viewer will open and display the NEF file.
