How to Recover an Unsaved Word 2003 File

Is there anything that strikes more fear in a Word 2003 user's heart than a system crash? Suddenly, you lose several hours of work, and you face the prospect of starting over. Fortunately, Word 2003 comes with a powerful AutoSave feature that will automatically save your work for you -- as long as you have not disabled the feature. This lets you recover the files. Although you may not get your document back right where you left off, you may only need to rewrite a small portion of the document.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open Microsoft Word 2003.

    • 2

Click "File," "Open" to open a browse dialog. You can also click the "Open" button on the main toolbar.

    • 3

Browse to the folder that contains your recovered files. The default location is: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word.

    • 4

Select "All Files" from the "Files of Type" drop-down list.

    • 5

Locate the recovered file within the directory. Recovered file names follow this format: "AutoRecovery save of x.asd." "X" is the name of your file.

    • 6

Click the "Open" button to open the recovered file.

    • 7

Select "File," "Save As" from the main menu to save your recovered document as a Word 2003 file.

    • 8

Select "Yes" if you get a confirmation message that asks you whether you want to replace the file.
