How to Make an Emo Backpack

How to Make an Emo Backpack thumbnail
Express your love for emo rock on your favorite backpack.

Following the declining hardcore punk rock scene in the mid 1980s, emo (emotional) rock grew in popularity with the help of bands like Rites of Spring, Husker Du and Jawbreaker. Emo rock can be identified by its passionate, breathy vocals and melodic guitar work. Though emo fashion has only recently become identifiable, it often involves an abundance of black apparel, low-cut sneakers and gratuitous use of band names or logos. Emo fans often decorate their backpacks or school book bags to express their appreciation of the genre.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach fabric band patches to your backpack. Heat an iron, place the patch in the desired location on your backpack, and press the iron over the patch for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Application instructions may vary among patches, so refer to the directions on your particular patch.

    • 2

Cut band names or logos out of your old emo T-shirts, and sew them onto your backpack. Sew a border around the fabric, snip the thread and tie a knot to secure the fabric to the backpack. This will give your backpack a rugged, completely custom look.

    • 3

Write song lyrics or the names of your favorite emo bands on your backpack using fabric markers. Use several different colors to add variety to your backpack.

    • 4

Attach button pins displaying your favorite band's name to your backpack. Pins can be purchased cheaply at most concerts or at your local music store.

Tips & Warnings

  • Safety pins can also be used to secure patches or fabric cut from your band T-shirts. This option also adds extra flair and personality to your emo backpack.

  • Band patches and other merchandise can be purchased at concerts, your local music store or the band's merchandise website.

  • Wield your sewing needle carefully when puncturing the backpack's thick fabric.
