How to Promote Your Video on YouTube as Featured

According to Alexa Web statistics for June 2011, more than 25 percent of all Web users visit the YouTube.com website at least once a day. This means that hundreds of millions of users view YouTube every day. If you have a video you would like to promote on YouTube, Google offers you a way to do so using their AdWords advertising campaign. Once you sign up for AdWords, YouTube helps to promote your videos by featuring them on prominent parts of the site, or displaying links to the clips high up on the list of search results when users search for videos.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Gmail.com website, and create a free account if you do not already have one. After you create your Gmail account, visit YouTube.com, and create a new account with your Gmail login credentials.

    • 2

Click the "Upload" button at the top of YouTube page. Follow the prompts for uploading the video from your computer to the YouTube site.

    • 3

Visit the Google AdWords site, then click the "Try AdWords Now" link. Log in with your Gmail username and password.

    • 4

Select your country, time zone and preferred currency in the list options on the AdWords enrollment page, then click "Continue." Wait a few minutes for a confirmation email to arrive in your Gmail inbox. Open the email, and click the link inside the message to verify you email address.

    • 5

Click the "Billing" tab on your AdWords account page, then "Billing Preferences." Select your billing address country or territory. Select "Postpay" or "Prepay" as billing type. Note -- "Postpay" is not available in all areas. Accept the AdWords "Terms and Conditions."

    • 6

Enter your billing address information, then click "Save and Activate." If you have a voucher, enter the voucher number in the "Voucher code" field in the "Billing preferences" section.

    • 7

Click the "Create your first campaign" link. Enter a name for the advertising campaign. Select the preferred language of viewers you want to target.

    • 8

Click the "Add keywords" link. Enter keywords you want to associate with your YouTube video. Keywords are terms YouTube users enter into the search box to find videos.

    • 9

Enter the maximum amount you want to pay for YouTube search results that display a link to your video or "Suggested (Featured)" links to your video (per thousand views or impressions). Enter your maximum bid amount for clicks that lead to your video (per click). Enter the maximum amount you want to spend each day for both link displays and clicks to your video page.

    • 10

Click the "Add placements" link. Click the "Display Ad Builder" link, then click the "Audio and Video" category link. Click the "Choose" button, then enter any ad text you want to include with the promoted video.

    • 11

Click the "Launch Media Picker" link. Browse to the video you uploaded to your YouTube account earlier. Since you used the same Gmail email address for both your AdWords and YouTube accounts, Google links the two to make finding your videos easier.

    • 12

Select the position of your ad text in the video player or page (top, side, or bottom). Select the "Suggested (Featured) video option.

    • 13

Click the "Save Ad" button. Wait a few hours for your ad campaign to start. YouTube features your video on the account homepage of some users (depending on the user's location and video preferences). YouTube also displays your video link at the top -- or near the top -- of search results pages when users search for videos tagged with keywords you entered.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on your "cost per thousand impressions" or "click-through" bid amount, YouTube may not feature your video as often as it does those of advertisers with higher bids. Likewise, YouTube positions video links in search results based on the amount bids placed in an ad campaign.
