How to Make Multiple WordPress Categories for Children

How to Make Multiple WordPress Categories for Children thumbnail
WordPress blogs can be written for children with categories designed just for kids.

WordPress blogs can be configured to use categories to group and separate blog posts by different topics. By default, a visitor to a WordPress blog will be presented with all blog posts, in descending chronological order with the most recent post at the top. Categories allow the visitor to select a group of specific posts relevant to their interests. To further establish a hierarchy, categories can be configured as "children" of a specific "parent" category. A blogger can create multiple categories for children-related topics and designate those as, ironically, "children" of a single "parent" category, such as "Just For Kids."

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to the WordPress Dashboard using an administrator-level account. The WordPress Dashboard login page is accessed at http://www.YourDomainName.com/wp-admin. Replace "YourDomainName" with the domain name used for this WordPress installation.

    • 2

Click on the "Categories" link in the "Posts" menu on the left-side of the WordPress Dashboard.

    • 3

Type the name of the new children's category in the "Name" field located below the "Add New Category" heading.

    • 4

Enter a URL-friendly version of the new category name in the "Slug" field. A URL-friendly version of the category name usually contains all lowercase letters and spaced are replaced by hyphens. For example, a category titles "Kid's Games" might use "kids-games" in the URL-friendly Slug field.

    • 5

Select the Parent category from the "Parent" drop-down list, if applicable. Any other category already configured can be select as a parent for the new category. Parent categories can be used to establish a hierarchy. A blog might designate a "Sports" category, which is then used as the parent category for "Football," "Baseball," "Youth Football," and "Youth Baseball" sub-categories. A visitor to the WordPress blog could then select "Sports" to list all sports-related posts, or "Sports," then "Youth Football" to list only the posts relevant to youth football.

    • 6

Enter a description of the new category in the "Description" field. This is optional, but some WordPress themes display the category description information.

    • 7

Click on the "Add New Category" button to save the new category information.
