How to Do a Paper Decoupage Mosaic
Decoupage is a craft that involves decorating a surface by covering it with paper and sealing with an adhesive or sealant. Decoupage has an extensive history, beginning in the 12th century in China and spreading worldwide. It became common during the 18th century in Europe and eventually was adopted by modern artists, including Matisse and Picasso. Making a decoupage mosaic requires a plain surface and pieces of paper in various sizes. Choose paper with different colors and patterns to provide interest for your project. Gather your materials and start making your paper decoupage mosaic.

1
Prepare the wood surface that you want to decoupage. Lightly sand the surface to ensure that it is even. Use a damp rag to remove sandpaper debris, dust and dirt, which will negatively affect the aesthetic outcome of your project if not removed. If desired, paint the surface with acrylic paints and allow the paint to dry completely.

2
Cut the paper into pieces. Try cutting different sizes and shapes, since mosaics contain variations within the design.

3
Arrange the paper pieces on the surface. Allow a small space, about 1/8 of an inch, between each piece of paper to achieve a mosaic appearance. Apply a small amount of glue to the back of each piece and then adhere it in place. Avoid adding too much glue, which will cause the paper to wrinkle.

4
Apply decoupage sealer to the mosaic with a paintbrush. Use even brushstrokes and work slowly to ensure that every inch of the surface is covered. Allow the sealer to dry completely and then add another coat. Continue this process until the surface has three to four coats of sealant, which will protect the paper from moisture.
