How to Index the Site With Drupal

Indexing your site with search engines is necessary if you want Internet users to be able to find it. Although search engines generally pick up sites automatically after some time, you can speed up the process by creating an XML sitemap and submitting it. This allows search engines to find your site's content more easily, and enables them to index it faster.

Instructions

  1. Creating an XML Sitemap

    • 1

Visit the XML Sitemap module page in the Drupal repository (see Resources). Click on the download link to download the module.

    • 2

Access your Drupal admin panel. Click on "Modules" and "Install New Module." Click on "Choose File" and select the "XML Sitemap" zip file. Click "Install" then place a check next to the module to enable it.

    • 3

Click on "Configuration." Click on "Add New XML Sitemap" and "Save." Click on "Settings."

    • 4

Click on "Content" and choose what content types you want to include in the sitemap. For example, you could include articles but not pages, or vice versa.

    • 5

Click on "Save Configuration" to build your sitemap. The default URL is: http://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.

    Submitting the Sitemap

    • 6

Visit the Google Webmasters site and sign in with your Google Account. If you don't have one, click "Sign Up Now."

    • 7

Click on "Add a Site" and type your site's URL. Click "Continue." Click on "Upload an HTML File to Your Server." Download the verification file.

    • 8

Access your server's file manager in a new window or tab and upload the verification file to the root Drupal installation folder. Return to the Google Webmasters tab or window and click "Verify."

    • 9

Click on your site's name in the listing. Click on "Site Configuration." Click on "Sitemaps."

    • 10

Click on "Submit a Sitemap." Type the sitemap URL into the back and click "Submit" to provide Google with your sitemap.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once the site is indexed in Google, it will generally get picked up much faster by other search engines; however, you can also manually submit your site to other search engines, such as Yahoo! To submit to Yahoo, visit the Yahoo! Site Explorer and click on "Submit a Feed." Submit your sitemap URL using the field. You'll need a Yahoo! account to do so.
