How to Stamp on Terracotta
Terracotta is a reddish clay frequently used to make tiles, vases and other decorative objects. Flower pots are commonly made from this fired clay. Because terracotta has a porous surface, you can paint it quite easily. Instead of buying expensive, decorated pots from the store, you can create personalized terracotta pots for a fraction of the price. Feel free to experiment with different designs and color combinations to come up with a composition you truly love.
Things You'll Need
- Acrylic paint
- Stamp
- Scrap paper
- Plate or piece of cardboard
- Clear acrylic gloss
- Soap
- Pencil
Instructions
-
-
1
Wash the terracotta pot thoroughly using warm water and soap to remove any debris.
-
2
Turn the pot upside down and let it dry completely.
-
-
3
Paint the pot a solid color using acrylic paint if you want a base color behind your stamped designs. Let the pot dry before moving on.
-
4
Choose the stamp or stamps you'd like to decorate your terracotta to with. Small stamps will be less difficult to stamp on the curved surface of the pot, but you can use larger stamps as well. A sponge stamp will be especially easy to stamp on the pot.
-
5
Mark your preferred placement of the stamps on the pot's surface with a pencil.
-
6
Put some paint on a plate or piece of cardboard. Try to spread it out evenly.
-
7
Press the stamp into the paint with even pressure across the entire stamp surface.
-
8
Stamp your design onto a piece of scrap paper to practice applying it before you move on to the pot.
-
9
Press the stamp onto the pot firmly and steadily. If you are using a large rubber stamp, hold the pot in one hand and apply the stamp with the other. Roll the pot while holding the stamp still, so that the stamp can match the curvature of the terracotta pot.
-
10
Let the painted design dry entirely.
-
11
Paint over the pot with a clear acrylic gloss to seal your design and protect it from the elements.
