How to Crochet a Raffia Safari Hat
Raffia is a soft, pliable and strong fiber made from a palm tree of Madagascar. This type of fiber is exported around the world to make yarn that is used to bind vegetables together, weave baskets and knit hats, mats and bags. At times, it also bear the name of "rabanne" when it is referred to as a native cloth from Madagascar. You can get raffia fiber at most craft stores and it comes in a variety of shade, perfect to personalize your own raffia safari hat.

- Size J-10 crochet hook
- Raffia yarn
- Large eye blunt needle
- Split ring stitch marker

Create a gauge to determine how tight you have to crochet the raffia yarn to make your safari hat. You should have 3 rows of 6 stitches each to make a 2-inch square.

Begin with 3 chain. Do 11 double crochet in the first stitch chain. Join in the first stitch and insert a markers where the round is joined. Move the marker into the first stitch each time you complete a round.

Chain 2 stitches and make 2 double crochet in the same stitch you joined in on the last round. Do 2 double crochet in each stitch for the rest of the round. Join in the first stitch.

Chain 2 stitches and make 2 double crochet in the same stitch you joined in on the last round. Do 1 double crochet in the next stitch, then 2 double crochet in the following and keep alternating until you are left with one stitch in which you should make 2 double crochet. Join in the first stitch.

Chain 2 stitches and make 2 double crochet in the same stitch you joined in on the last round. Do 1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches, then 2 double crochet in the next stitch and keep alternating until you are left with one stitch in which you should make 1 double crochet. Join in the first stitch.

Chain 2 stitches and make 2 double crochet in the same stitch you joined in on the last round. Do 1 double crochet in the next 3 stitches, then 2 double crochet in the next stitch and keep alternating until you are left with 2 stitches in which you should do 1 double crochet in each. Join in the first stitch.

Chain 2 stitches, yarn over and pull up a loop in same stitch as you joined in. Skip the next stitch, yarn over ,and pull up a loop. Repeat until you have 5 loops on your hook. Chain 1 stitch and repeat the process. This is also called a crossed bar stitch. End your last stitch crossed bar in the same stitch as your first round. You should have 30 crossed bar stitch before joining.

Do a slip stitch in the next chain space, chain 2 more, and then do a crossed bar stitch in each single stitch for the whole round. Repeat for 3 more rounds.

Repeat the same instructions as for round 6 (Step 7).

Do a slip stitch in the next chain space, chain 2 more and do 3 crossed bar stitch in each single stitch. Repeat 3 more times. Join the first stitch to the crossed bar stitch.

Do a slip stitch in the next chain space, chain 2 more and do a crossed bar stitch in each single stitch for the whole round.

Chain 2, make a reverse half double crochet in each chain and join in the first stitch. Fasten off and use your needle to insert the left-over yarn tail into the rim of your hat.
