How to Crochet a Pie

How to Crochet a Pie thumbnail
Crocheting a pie is an entertaining project for any age.

In the past, crocheting was generally associated with grandmothers, but in recent years it has become a popular hobby of both young and old. Crocheting models of objects is especially popular, often referred to by the Japanese word, "amigurumi." Making a life-sized, crocheted fruit pie is a clever way to add a bit of whimsy to your decor, or it can make an unusual gift for a quirky friend.

Instructions

    • 1

Crochet in a spiral, in the yarn color of your choice, to make the top of the pie. Start by chaining two, then six single crochets in the second chain from your hook. Use a slip stitch to join your first and last single crochet together. Chain one, then make two single crochets in each stitch around the circle. Place your stitch marker in this stitch. Single crochet-in the next stitch, then make two single crochets in the following stitch, repeating this alternation all the way around. Move your stitch marker to the last stitch in this round. Single crochet-in each of the next two stitches, then make two single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat all the way around. Move your stitch marker to the last stitch in this round. Keep going around, adding another single crochet in the sequence until your circle is the size of the top of a pie. Most pie plates are about 8 inches across, so make the top of the pie about 8.5 to 9 inches, to account for the sloped sides of a pie. When you have finished, fasten off your yarn and weave in the end.

Repeat Step 1 to make the bottom of the pie, but stop at 8 inches. Continue single crocheting around, but only increase every 45 degrees around the circle. Stitch markers will be helpful for keeping track of these angles. This will create the sloped sides of your pie crust. Stop crocheting when the circumference of your pie crust sides and filling circle are the same.

Slip stitch around the pie with the yarn crust, leaving a 3-inch opening. Stuff the pie with the desired material and finish slip stitching around.

Chain one, then make two single crochets in each slip stitch around the pie. This will create a ruffled edge, mimicking the crimping of a real pie crust. Depending on the gauge you've chosen to work in, you may want to make an additional row to make the ruffled edge stand out.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you'd like the pie to be weighted, try adding dried beans or corn kernels to the bottom of the pie, before you fill it the rest of the way with stuffing.

  • Gauge, needle size and yarn thickness do not matter for this project, as long as your gauge is tight enough to not allow stuffing to show through.

  • If you'd like to make an apple pie, try making 1-inch wide strips of crust colored crochet. Weave them together, as in a real pie, and use a tapestry needle to sew the strips into the slip stitching, joining the crust and the filling.
