How to Make My Own Fashion Designs

A fashion designer often draws her ideas by hand.

If you have a dream of someday becoming a famous designer, then one of the first things you need to do is start practicing making your own fashion designs. A fashion design is basically a drawing of a prototype for a particular article of clothing. The drawing is then used to manufacture the article of clothing that you envision. A poor drawing will make it more difficult for you to have your clothing designs accepted; hence, practicing the art of fashion design and perfecting your drawing skills are imperative to achieve success in this highly competitive field. As you develop more confidence and acquire refined techniques and skills, you will create designs that flow naturally to capture a certain look --- for instance, elegance, sophistication, or sportiness.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a body template to use for your fashion design. The body template is useful if you are not adept at drawing people, and it helps to keep the proportions completely realistic. Choose a body template that is posing in such a way that the unique elements of your fashion design will be highlighted; for instance, you may wish to consider the strident fashion figure template or the elegant modern body template.

    • 2

Place layout paper over the top of a body template. The layout paper is transparent, which makes tracing much easier.

    • 3

Practice your design before you start drawing on the layout paper. On a blank sheet of paper, sketch your design roughly, implementing the key elements, such as a backless dress or a sequined skirt.

    • 4

Draw on the layout paper. Use colored pencils to fill in the elements of your design and add as many intricate details as you would want to include on the actual physical garment.

    • 5

Work until you have designed the entire outfit. If your fashion design is only a shirt, be sure to fill in neutral slacks on your body template to present a complete ensemble.

    • 6

Mount the layout paper to a firmer surface, such as a piece of cardboard. This makes it easier for you to formally present your fashion design.
