How to Make Tree Ornaments Using Glitter thumbnail
Glitter comes in large, small and fine pieces.

Glitter is made from plastic film or metallic foil and cut by machine into tiny pieces that shimmer and shine. It is used in makeup and makes greeting cards sparkle and clothing look fancy. It's also appropriate for Christmas craft ornaments. Working with glitter can be messy, but it is worth the problems when the Christmas tree glimmers from glittery handmade decorations. Instructions

  1. Pine Cone Ornament

    • 1

Cover the working area with newspaper, and place a piece of craft paper on the tabletop.

    • 2

Mix 2 parts glue with 1 part water in a bowl.

    • 3

Paint one side of the pine cone by dipping an artist's paintbrush in the glue and spreading it on the edges of each pine cone petal.

    • 4

Place glitter in another bowl, and hold the cone with the glue-painted side up over it. Use a plastic spoon to scoop out glitter, and sprinkle it over the cone.

    • 5

Shake the cone over the bowl, then do the other side. Let the cone dry the craft paper.

    • 6

Attach ribbon or gold thread by weaving around the last row of petals at the large end. Tie to make a loop and hang on the tree.

    Recycled Ornament

    • 7

Spread thinned glue over the surface of an old ornament, or draw shapes like stars or circles with the glue and paintbrush on the surface of the ball.

    • 8

Hold the ornament over a bowl of glitter, scoop some out with a plastic spoon, and sprinkle it over the ornament.

    • 9

Shake excess glitter off over the bowl, and set it on the craft paper to dry.

    Ball Ornament

    • 10

Remove the metal or plastic hanger from the top of a clear glass ornament and set aside.

    • 11

Place 1 tsp. of rubbing alcohol inside the ornament through the hole. Swirl it around so it is exposed to the entire inside surface, then pour out. Let the ornament dry.

    • 12

Pour glitter into the ball through the opening. Place a finger over the opening and shake. Add more glitter until the entire inside is covered, then pour out the excess glitter into a bowl.

    • 13

Replace the hanger and hang on a tree.

Tips & Warnings

  • The craft paper catches any glitter that falls on the table. Pick the paper up, and slightly fold it down the middle. The glitter will collect in the fold and can easily be poured back into the bowl.

  • Use glitter glue on recycled ornaments to limit messiness.

  • Keep your hair back when working with glitter since it is hard to get out. Wear clothing with short sleeves and no pockets. Avoid fuzzy clothing like sweaters when working with glitter.
