How to Tie a Knot to Finish a Knit

Finish a knitted bind-off by tying a knot in the last stitch.

The last step in any knitting project is to bind off the stitches. Binding off, also known as casting off, forms a neat edge and keeps the stitches from unraveling. There are many different styles of binding off, from the basic technique of crossing every knit stitch over the stitch that comes after it to a stretchy bind-off sewn with a yarn or darning needle. No matter which bind-off you use, they all end by forming a knot out of the last stitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Bind off the last row using the method of your choice until you have one stitch remaining on your right needle.

    • 2

Cut or break your yarn, leaving a 3-inch tail.

    • 3

Thread a darning needle with the yarn tail.

    • 4

Pull the knitting needle out of the last stitch.

    • 5

Bring the darning needle around to the back of the stitch. Insert the needle into the stitch and pull the yarn tail through. Pull tightly on the tail to make a knot.

    • 6

Use the yarn needle to weave the tail down the side of your knitting.
