The military pays bonuses for reenlisting.

The government provides incentives for soldiers to reenlist once their initial and subsequent service contracts expire. This actually saves the military money because they retain valuable experience and do not have to retrain new soldiers from the ground up to fill in jobs. Reenlistment bonuses vary, based on job type, and they are generally higher the more education or expertise the job requires. Bonus amounts, also known as selective reenlistment bonuses (SRBs), are published every year and fluctuate based on current enlisted levels. Pay levels are separated into tiers, based on time in service and pay grade.
