Sew the patch in the right place.

If you or your son is a Boy Scout, you are well acquainted with the idea of earning badges. Boy Scouts of America sets guidelines for applying these patches correctly to the scout uniform. Other groups, such as karate classes, may incorporate patches as well. Unless you can take a shortcut by using an iron-on patch, you will need to sew the patch on the clothing. It is a straightforward process that requires a needle and thread.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain thread that is the same color as the edge of the badge or the item of clothing you are sewing the patch onto. The thread will blend in and disguise your stitching.

    • 2

Identify where exactly you need to put the patch. For example, merit badges are attached to the front of a Boy Scout's sash -- or on the back if there is no space. The Scout's varsity letter is attached on the front of the sash in the bottom left corner. Speak to a group leader if you are unsure of the proper location.

    • 3

Secure the patch into the right position using a safety pin. Hold the uniform up to make sure the patch is straight and aligned correctly. Avoid putting the patch at an angle because it will look messy.

    • 4

Loop a length of thread through the eye of the needle. Dampen the end with your mouth if necessary to flatten any small fibers that might make it difficult to thread.

    • 5

Begin sewing. Push the needle through the underside of the clothing and then the edge of the patch. Pull the thread through until two inches is left on the underside. Tie a double knot on the underside to prevent the thread from being pulled through the clothing, which would allow the patch to fall off.

    • 6

Stitch around the patch completely, leaving a small gap between each stitch. Be sure to pull the thread taut for each stitch. End on the underside, and tie off the end of the thread with a double knot. Cut off any remaining thread with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't sew, use fabric glue to attach the patch to the uniform.
